Abstract
This paper sets out various unusual features in the immigration and nationality
requirements applicable to Hong Kong (HK) while it was a British colony. The same
issues after the change of sovereignty to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1997
will also be discussed. It will be shown that many of these issues are quite different from
those of other common law countries such as Canada or Australia . Many are driven by
policy considerations rather than legal reasoning.
