Abstract
The first Chinese-language film on the Opium War is Wanshi liufang, which was made under the Japanese Occupation. The Occupation cinema has been peripherized in the dominant historiography of Chinese film. Focusing on the shifting historical contexts in which Wanshi liufang was produced and screened, this paper invites us to rethink the multivalent, ambiguous relations between politics and film cultrue in an extreme situation.
